CPCT exam pattern and typing test duration

CPCT is a computer-based test with a multiple-choice section followed by an English typing test and a Hindi typing test. Each typing test has a short mock test before it so you can check the keyboard.

CPCT typing speed required

CPCT reports your typing speed on the scorecard, and the speed you need depends on the post you apply for. Recruitment notices for many posts ask for 30 net words per minute in English and 20 in Hindi, but always use the figure in the notice for your post.

The CPCT scorecard is valid for 7 years from the date of the exam, according to the CPCT website.

Which Hindi keyboard layout to use in CPCT

The CPCT website publishes two Hindi keyboard layouts: Remington (GAIL) and InScript. Both produce Unicode Hindi, so you do not need the Kruti Dev font for the exam.

On HindiType, InScript matches the standard Windows Hindi layout. The Remington option follows the Kruti Dev 010 typewriter arrangement, which shares most key positions with Remington GAIL but is not identical, so compare it with the official layout image before relying on it.

How to prepare for the CPCT Hindi typing test

  • Pick one layout early and stay with it until the exam.
  • Practise full 15-minute sessions at least a few times a week to build stamina, not just 1-minute sprints.
  • Aim for accuracy first. Errors reduce net speed, so slowing down slightly often raises your score.
  • Keep your eyes on the passage and use Backspace only for the word you are typing.
  • Use the guided lessons for any keys you still look for.

What this practice test measures

Speed counts the correct characters you type, divided by five and by the minutes elapsed. Accuracy compares correct characters with everything typed. CPCT uses its own software and scoring, so treat this as a practice score that shows whether you are improving.

This page covers the Hindi section only. An English typing test is not available on HindiType yet.
