Mangal font

Mangal is a Unicode Devanagari font made by Microsoft for Hindi and other languages written in Devanagari. It ships with Windows, so you install it from Windows itself rather than from a download site. Text typed in Mangal is standard Unicode Hindi and stays readable in any other Hindi font.

How to get the Mangal font on Windows 10 and 11

From Windows 10 onwards, Mangal is part of an optional feature called Devanagari Supplemental Fonts. It installs automatically when Hindi is added as a language. If Mangal is missing from Word, add the feature yourself:

  1. Open Settings, then System, then Optional features (in Windows 10: Settings, then Apps, then Optional features).
  2. Select View features or Add a feature.
  3. Search for Devanagari Supplemental Fonts, select it and install it. Windows downloads it from Windows Update, so you need to be online.
  4. Restart Word or any open app, then choose Mangal from the font list.

Is Mangal free to download?

Mangal comes with your Windows licence, so there is no separate download or fee on Windows. Microsoft does not allow its fonts to be redistributed, which is why HindiType does not offer the font file. Avoid unofficial download sites.

On a Mac, Linux or Android device, use a free Unicode font such as Noto Sans Devanagari or Hind instead. Because Mangal text is Unicode, it displays correctly in those fonts without any conversion.

How to type in Mangal font

Mangal is a font, not a keyboard, so you can use any Unicode Hindi typing method with it.

  1. Add Hindi in Settings under Time & language, then choose the Hindi Traditional keyboard (InScript). Press Windows + Space to switch languages.
  2. Or type Hindi with English letters on HindiType's English to Hindi typing tool and paste the result into your document.
  3. Select the text and choose Mangal from the font list.

Mangal vs Kruti Dev

Mangal stores real Unicode Hindi characters. Kruti Dev 010 is a legacy font that stores English characters and draws Hindi shapes over them. Changing the font of a document does not convert between them: use the Kruti Dev to Unicode converter to bring Kruti Dev text into Mangal, or Unicode to Kruti Dev for the other direction.

Using Mangal on a website

Mangal is only present on Windows devices. List it with fallbacks so Hindi text looks right everywhere:

font-family: Mangal, "Nirmala UI", "Noto Sans Devanagari", sans-serif;
