Add the Hindi keyboard
Windows includes Hindi keyboards; you do not need to install extra software.
- Open Settings and go to Time & language, then Language & region.
- Choose Add a language, search for Hindi and install it. The display language does not need to change.
- Open Hindi's language options and check the keyboards. Hindi Traditional is the InScript layout. Recent versions also offer a Hindi Phonetic keyboard.
- Press Windows + Space, or use the language button on the taskbar, to switch between English and Hindi.
Choose a typing method
InScript (Hindi Traditional) is best when you want speed or need it for an exam. It takes practice, because each Hindi character has its own key.
Phonetic typing lets you type Hindi sounds with English letters. It is easier to start with but slower for long text. HindiType's English to Hindi typing works the same way in the browser with no setup, and suggests words as you type.
Fonts and compatibility
Both methods produce Unicode Hindi, which displays with fonts Windows already has, such as Nirmala UI and Mangal. You only need Kruti Dev when an existing document or form was made with it.
