Is the SSC CGL typing test in Hindi?

No. The SSC CGL Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) is taken in English. Hindi typing is an option in the SSC CHSL typing test for LDC and JSA posts, where candidates choose English or Hindi.

HindiType currently offers a Hindi test only, so use this page to prepare for the CHSL Hindi typing test.

Hindi keyboard layouts allowed in SSC

The SSC CHSL 2019 skill test notice listed four Hindi options: InScript, Kruti Dev, Remington GAIL and Remington CBI. Choose the one you already type fastest on, and confirm it is listed in your notice.

  • InScript: the standard Unicode Hindi layout built into Windows.
  • Kruti Dev: the Remington typewriter arrangement with the Kruti Dev 010 font. Practise it with the Remington option here.
  • Remington GAIL and CBI: Unicode versions of the typewriter layout.

How words per minute relate to key depressions

SSC counts one word as five key depressions, so 30 words per minute equals 30 × 5 × 60 = 9,000 key depressions per hour. HindiType counts correct Unicode characters instead of keystrokes. Some Hindi characters need two keystrokes, so your HindiType speed and an SSC key depression count will not match exactly.

How to prepare for the SSC typing test

  • Practise full 10-minute sessions so your speed holds up to the end.
  • Accuracy matters: SSC allows only a small percentage of errors, so slow down rather than guess.
  • Do not rely on Backspace. Fix only the word you are typing.
  • Practise with passages of formal Hindi, including numbers and punctuation.
  • Use the guided lessons for keys you still search for.
